Social work Services

Unfamiliar with their new community and unable to financially support themselves, many asylum seekers are unable to meet their basic needs. ASAP works with clients to create an individualized service plan that promotes safety, stability, and overall health and wellbeing. Our social service program assists clients with a wide range of services including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Counseling referrals

  • Medical referrals

  • Emergency housing referrals

  • Faith-based introductions

  • Educational & training opportunities

  • Immigration legal fee subsidizes (At this time, D.C. residents only)

  • Information & referrals

  • Emotional support

  • Psychoeducation

  • Cultural Navigation

  • Wellness Planning

  • Material assistance



For many asylum seekers, economic survival is imperative to maintain hope and personal dignity. ASAP’s employment program combines a 30-hour job readiness training, individualized career planning, job coaching, informational interview matching, and job placement services as needed. Our goal is to equip asylum seekers with the knowledge, skills, and resources necessary to secure and retain safe, legal, and meaningful employment. Our employment program helps asylum seekers learn how to:

  • Complete a job application

  • Prepare and tailor a U.S. style resume and cover letter

  • Develop interviewing skills

  • Learn where to access vocational training and other professional development opportunities


Social connection is essential to one's physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. ASAP’s community engagement program facilitates opportunities for clients to connect with each other and the larger community. The goal of this program is to provide a space where asylum seekers can connect with new people, build friendships, and grow their social and professional networks. Program activities include:

  • Community events hosted by ASAP and other organizations

  • ASAP's annual Thanksgiving Celebration event

  • Opportunities to celebrate American holidays with ASAP volunteers

  • Outreach event participation

  • Participation in ASAP’s speakers bureau
