Who is an Asylum Seeker?

An asylum seeker is a person who has fled his or her country because of persecution or a well-founded fear of persecution and is applying for legal protection to be recognized as a refugee after they enter the U.S. An asylum seeker is officially recognized as a refugee (or, an “asylee”) when their petition for asylum is granted by a U.S. asylum officer or an immigration judge.

As of September 2011, the U.S. asylum backlog has increased by 1,283%. The unprecedented number of pending cases means many asylum applicants now wait more than 6 years before their immigration case is resolved. Although the U.S. is 1 of 44 countries that accepts asylum applications, it is the only country that denies asylum seekers access to critical services and significantly delays the ability to work. Unfamiliar with their new community and unable to financially support themselves, many asylum seekers experience extreme poverty, continued victimization, and profound isolation during a prolonged immigration process.

Founded in 2016, the Asylum Seeker Assistance Project (ASAP) is the first and only nonprofit providing comprehensive services to support the estimated 25,000 asylum seekers living in the DC Metro region.
